Director Soham Shah Sues Netflix: Claims ‘Squid Game’ Plagiarized His 2009 Film ‘Luck’, Netflix Denies Allegations

Netflix has been sued by director Soham Shah for allegedly using a copy of his 2009 film “Luck” to create the famous Korean television series called “Squid Game”. On Sunday, the streaming service rejected the allegations.

A Netflix representative claimed in a statement, “This claim has no merit. ‘Squid Game’ was created by and written by Hwang Dong Hyuk and we intend to defend this matter vigorously”.

Documents from the case were obtained by American source TMZ “Squid Game”-which debuted in 2021 and quickly became the most watched series on Netflix -is a “rip-off” of the movie starring Imran Khan, Shruti Haasan and Sanjay Dutt.

As per TMZ, “it’s only after characters start competing that they realize losing any of the challenges means death — and that the death of a fellow participant also increases the pot of money available to the remaining contestants”.

Shah stated in the documents that he wrote the film’s plot between 2006 and July 2009, when it was published.

Hwang has stated in several interviews that he had the original concept for the Netflix series in 2008. The allegations made by Shah come months before “Squid Game” returns for its second season, which premieres on December 26 and stars Korean actress Lee Jung-jae.

Some online users are dismissing it as a baseless claim, while others acknowledge the resemblance.  For now, we will wait for further information to emerge.
