Snapdeal, the online marketplace headquartered in New Delhi, has decided against renewing the contract of actor Aamir Khan, who was signed as the brand ambassador.
The contract expired on January 31 and Snapdeal has not renewed it, sources said. When contacted, a Snapdeal spokesperson said: “We would not like to comment on this.” The actor was not available for comment either.
Aamir had come under attack from Sangh parivar leaders and supporters in November after he said that his wife Kiran Rao wondered if they should move out of the country because of the atmosphere of intolerance. Many protesters deleted the Snapdeal app because Aamir was its brand ambassador. The company then distanced itself from his statement.
Snapdeal may not replace Khan with another celebrity as it looks to rationalize ad expenditure and focus instead on enhancing categories and trying to encourage buyers to shop through its FreeCharge wallet.
The company even stopped using the actor in its advertisements after the controversy broke out. Before this, Snapdeal had extensively featured Khan in its “Dil Ki Deal” print, television and digital campaigns.
Recently, Khan was dropped out from the “Incredible India” campaign whereas Amitabh Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra’s was put forward as its new ambassadors.
Here’s what people think about it:
Now @snapdeal drops @aamir_khan from #DilKiDeal campaign. Should teach #Intolerance mongorers a lesson. #SnapdealSacksAamir
