I have covered the rise of hate crimes against Muslims since 2016. And while this is some of the most horrific footage I’ve seen, when I was first about the mosque attack in New Zealand— I was not surprised.

“Firearms and explosive devices were recovered” Police Commissioner Mike Bush said. The killer is an Australian extremist, authorities said, who apparently live streamed the attack on Facebook.
A 28-year-old Australian gunman named Brenton Tarrant live-streamed the whole act with a head-mounted camera from close range inside the Al Noor mosque. The video captured was extremely violent and showed indiscriminately shooting men, women and children.
I strongly condemn the horrific terrorist attack on Mosque in New Zealand during Friday prayers killing 40 people. I always belief that terrorism doesn’t have a religion. We must not allow these criminals to divided us! My thoughts and prayers are with the whole of New Zealand. pic.twitter.com/Jz4U38XTma

Police announced publicly not to share his extremely disturbing video footage online. In response to this, Facebook had removed the gunman’s Facebook and Instagram accounts and was removing the copies of the footage, if had any. Everyone praised the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to consider this violent act as terrorist attack and considered the Muslim people of her own country.
“They have chosen to make New Zealand their home, and it is their home. They are us. The person who has perpetuated this violence against us is not. They have no place in New Zealand.” – Jacinta Ardern, New Zealand Prime Minister ❤

“They are us”, says NZ PM Jacinta Ardern. She’s right. No one going to their place of worship should have to worry about their safety. Let no one underplay the scourge of Islamophobic, racist, extreme right terrorism. We need to rethink what we can do to counter it.
