In a shocking incident that has rocked Pune, a minor aged 17, son of a well known builder, was released on bail with some bizarre conditions after his Porsche sped through the city without displaying a number plate and rammed into another motorbike killing two young engineers.
The accident took place in Kalyani Nagar area in the wee hours of Sunday. A teenager’s Porsche allegedly driven under influence collided with a bike caused instant death of Anis Awadhiya and Ashwini Costa. They both were twenty four years old and returning from a party. This high speed crash also hit another car and pavement railings resulting in heavy damages to its bodywork.
The Juvenile Justice Board (JJB)’s decision to grant the minor bail on those conditions is even more shocking than this ghastly accident. The teenager has been instructed to:
– Work under Yerawada traffic police for 15 days
– Write an essay about the incident
– Go for treatment to stop drinking alcohol
– Attend psychiatric counseling sessions, reports must be submitted to court
The circumstances have sparked an extensive debate, with numerous people asking whether justice is being served or not. The police also pointed out that the father of the minor has been booked and they are investigating the whereabouts of the pub where the teenager was drinking.
The viral videos of the incident show a group assaulting him as he tried to run away; leading into public outrage. The police are pursuing charges in this case under several IPC sections, including rash driving and causing death by negligence.
Meanwhile, victims’ families and communities are grappling with a night that highlighted privileged youth gone bad in a perfect storm of recklessness, alcohol, and youthfulness.
This case raises important questions about juvenile justice and responsibility.
