Kannada Initiative: Bengaluru Auto Driver Bridges Language Gap

Social media is buzzing over a creative project in Bengaluru to promote the Kannada language. User Vatsalya posted an X post showing a “Learn Kannada” banner inside an autorickshaw. The banner displays popular greetings and phrases, prominently placed behind the driver’s seat. It also includes translations in both Kannada and English, helping passengers engage in casual conversations while riding.

Vatsalya highlighted the poster’s usefulness for both residents and tourists by calling it “very handy” when he uploaded a photo of it online. The poster provides key terms for everyday conversations, such as saying hello to the driver or asking for a quicker journey, making it an invaluable tool for people who are not familiar with Kannada.

“Namaskara sir,” which means “Hello sir,” opens the poster along with a number of other helpful phrases. “Naanu Kannada kalitha ideeni” means “I am learning Kannada,” for instance, while “Sir, swalpa bega hogi” means “Sir, ride a bit faster.” Other expressions answer often asked queries, such “Sir, UPI idiya? Do you accept UPI or only cash? “Athwa cash aa?” and “(Place name) ge hogtira?” indicate “Will you go to (place name)?”

Known online as “Aut0 Kannadiga,” the driver’s goal is to help non-Kannada speakers in the city overcome their language barrier. According to him, programs such as these can aid in bridging Bengaluru’s linguistic divide. In a video, he posted, “Let’s teach, let’s fix the language problem in Bengaluru,” while putting the placard inside his car.

Netizens have responded favorably to the move, with many praising the driver’s efforts. One comment complimenting the project reads,”My heartfelt thanks for your efforts! Jai Hind Jai Karnataka,” and “We will always support your efforts.” Aut0 Kannadiga has a significant social media following. He takes pride in promoting the Kannada language and culture. His engaging content highlights the richness of Kannada. Through his posts, he connects with his audience and encourages others to embrace this vibrant language and its heritage.
