JioCinema’s latest offering, “Pill,” brings Riteish Deshmukh and Pawan Malhotra together in
a gripping narrative that delves into the murky depths of the pharmaceutical industry.
Directed by Raj Kumar Gupta, known for his impactful films like “Aamir” and “No One Killed
Jessica,” the series promises a thrilling ride but falls short on emotional depth.
The show centers around Deshmukh’s character, a seemingly ordinary man who finds
himself entangled in a dangerous conspiracy. His portrayal is a refreshing break from his
usual comedic roles, showcasing his versatility. Deshmukh’s charm and earnest
performance anchor the series, making it worth the watch despite its shortcomings.
Pawan Malhotra delivers a menacing performance as the antagonist, exuding a chilling
calmness that makes his character all the more intimidating. His slow-motion entry and
devilish grin set the tone for his villainy, adding a layer of tension to the series.
“Pill” also attempts to inject humor through Deshmukh’s interactions and the subplot
involving a frustrated journalist forced to cover entertainment news. These moments of
levity, while entertaining, sometimes feel out of place in the otherwise dark narrative.
However, the series struggles with pacing and character development. Key characters,
including the curious employee who stumbles upon the conspiracy, weave in and out of the
storyline with little impact. Gupta’s reliance on monologues and heroic ordinariness leaves
much to be desired in terms of exploring the vulnerabilities and motivations of the
characters.
While “Pill” hooks viewers with its intriguing premise and strong performances, it ultimately
needed more emotional resonance to truly stand out. The series is a commendable effort,
but it doesn’t quite deliver the gut punch that Gupta’s earlier works managed to achieve.
Nonetheless, Deshmukh’s likability and the show’s engaging plot make it a worthwhile watch
on JioCinema.
