India claims its first gold at the 21st Commonwealth Games in Queensland, Australia.
World champion weightlifter, Saikhom Mirabai Chanu (48kg), won the gold medal in weightlifting. Mirabai Chanu broke her own personal record too with a power-packed performance.
She won the silver medal in 2014 Commonwealth Games, and now secured a gold in 2018. Mirabai Chanu lifted thrice (80kg, 84kg, and 86kg). In the later 3 lifts, she lifted the weights double her body weight (103kg, 107kg and 110kg).
She was congratulated with a massive round of applause from the huge crowd when her final total came out to be 196kg (86kg+110kg).
“I was not expecting to break records but I certainly wanted to break them when I came here. I can’t put in words, how it feels right now,” said Chanu.
