In West Bengal, Cyclone Remal kills four people and damages about 29,500 residences

The South 24 Parganas district, west Bengal was hitted by a heavy thunderstorm. The cyclone
called Remal originated in Bay of Bengal and after striking on the land kills 4 people and
destroys 29500 residences. The cyclone struck the land last Sunday night at the coast of West
Bengal and Bangladesh. 207,060 people are rescued till now in the rescue camp, and around
77,288 are still present in the camp.

The cyclone is responsible for the uprooting of several trees and damage of huge infrastructure.
Roads are blocked and police and NDRF are clearing them. Kolkata airport was opened for the
flight rescue teams helping people, which was suspended till Sunday noon. Among 4 people
who died in the cyclone, one died because of wall collapse in Kolkata, one in South 24
Paraganas because of tree uprooting was admitted to hospital. Two people in Purba
Bardhaman died because of electrocution.

After evaluating the situation, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee declared that the state has
suffered significant damage from the cyclone. She decided to give compensation to the people
who lost their homes and live in the cyclone. She also demanded immediate financial help from
central government.

With winds as high as 135 kmph, the cyclone hit shore on Sunday night near Sagar Island in the
state with Khepupara in Bangladesh. Prime Minister Narendra Modi organize a meeting for the
discussion of the cyclone striking the land, it’s effect, being prepare for the damage caused by it.
People of West Bengal living near sea shore, are highly affected and lost their home in the
cyclone.
