CSK to Retain Dhoni for IPL 2025?

Mahendra Singh Dhoni wants to keep playing cricket in the Indian Premier League (IPL) despite speculation about his future. CSK is considering a ₹4 crore offer to retain Dhoni for 2025. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend expressed his wish to keep playing for a few more years. At a promotional event for Rigi, Dhoni shared his goals. He mentioned his hope to enjoy his final years in the game.

Dhoni last played for India five years ago. Now, he is eligible to stay with CSK as an uncapped player. CSK can offer him a ₹4 crore salary under this status. This option became available when the IPL governing council reintroduced retention rules previously removed in 2021.

During the Rigi event, Dhoni shared his intent to enjoy the game. “I just want to enjoy whatever last few years of cricket I am able to play,” he said. He added, “When you play cricket like a professional sport, it becomes difficult to enjoy it just like a game,” highlighting the emotional challenges and commitments that come with professional cricket.

Before the IPL 2024 season, Dhoni passed CSK’s captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad. Reflecting on his years as captain, he said he intends to enjoy his remaining cricket years, despite the intense schedule.

Regarding his fitness, Dhoni explained the importance of maintaining a year-round routine to prepare for the two-and-a-half-month IPL season. “I have to keep myself fit for nine months so that I can play two and a half months of IPL,” he said. His approach to fitness is balanced; he trains for 15-25 days and then takes 15-20 days off. This routine allows him to indulge occasionally while sticking to a nutritious diet during training.

This balanced approach, Dhoni shared, helps him stay “in the groove” and ready for the demands of the game. Dedicated to the sport, Dhoni aims to finish his career on his own terms, whether or not he returns in 2025.
