Agniveer Ajay Kumar’s family has been compensated with 98 lakh rupees by the Indian
Army in a remarkable development that contradicts Rahul Gandhi’s statement. The latter
had claimed on social media that Agniveer Ajay Kumar’s family was not reimbursed for the
death.
“The amount of Rs.98.39 lakhs out of the total outstanding to the family of late Mr.Agniveer
Ajay has already been paid,” clarified Army Spokesman. Furthermore, they noted that more
than ex-gratia and other benefits worth around Rs 1.65 crores will be disbursed post
completion of police verification process.
Rahul Gandhi, in a video posted on his X account, accused Defence Minister Rajnath Singh
of misleading the Parliament about the compensation. The video featured Ajay Kumar’s
father, who claimed they had received nothing from the government. Addressing the Lok
Sabha, Gandhi criticised the government for treating Agniveers as “use-and-throw labourers”
and not recognizing them as martyrs.
In response, Rajnath Singh urged Gandhi not to mislead the Parliament, asserting that fallen
Agniveers receive Rs 1 crore in compensation. The Agnipath scheme, initiated on June 14,
2022, recruits youth aged 17-and-a-half to 23 years for a four-year term, retaining 25% for
an additional 15 years.
This controversy underscores the ongoing tension between the ruling government and the
opposition regarding the welfare of Agniveers. The Army emphasized its commitment to
expeditiously provide compensation to the families of fallen soldiers, including Agniveers. As
the debate continues, the public watches closely to see how the government addresses the
concerns raised by opposition leaders and ensures the well-being of its soldiers’ families.
