President Draupadi Murmu honored with Suriname’s Highest Civilian Honor

President Draupadi Murmu attended the cultural program during her tour to Suriname from June 4 – 6. During the event, she praised Suriname and said India and Suriname have similarities so she feels like her home here.

During the event, she said, “You get a great environment from the country’s greenery, trees and clean air, but what has attracted me the most is the diversity, hospitality, health and enthusiasm of the Surinamese people. Known for their diversity, the people of Suriname and India mix so easily with others that I feel like I am at home.”

On 5th June, she was honored with Suriname’s Highest Civilian Honor, namely, ‘Grand Order of the Chain of the Yellow Star’ by Suriname President Chandrika Prasad Santokhi.

Speaking on the occasion, President Murmu said, “This award is of great importance to India. It is all the more meaningful because of the fact that both the countries (India and Suriname) serve as beacons of empowerment and encouragement for women.” It happens.

On June 6, she tweeted, “This recognition holds tremendous significance, not only for me but also for the more than 1.4 billion people of India whom I represent.”

She also said, “I also dedicate this honor to the successive generations of the Indian-Surinamese community, who have played a stellar role in enriching the fraternal ties between our two countries.”

Twitter flooded with congratulation to the President and felt proud on receiving this honor.

She is the first women President and first Indian to receive this award. Both countries, India and Suriname, signed four Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in health, agriculture and capacity building during this visit.
