Droupadi Murmu, a former governor of Jharkhand and candidate for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), was chosen as India’s fifteenth president. She is the first tribal woman to hold the office and the country’s youngest president. Despite having already passed the halfway point after the third round of counting, she was proclaimed elected on Thursday after four rounds of counting. She held a commanding advantage over her challenger, the opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha, who later conceded the race.

On Twitter, prominent figures from various parties offer congratulations.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his belief that Droupadi Murmu will be an “excellent” President and claimed that India had written history by electing a daughter from a tribal community to the highest position.
